ProActive Rehab Adds Virtual Dietitian to Its Team

The multidisciplinary team at ProActive Rehab has expanded once again with the addition of Joline Beauregard BASc., RD, a Registered Dietitian offering Therapeutic Nutrition services from her home base of Whitehorse, YT.

Since graduating from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2017, Joline has worked in prenatal, infant and community nutrition, and is working towards her Certified Diabetes Educator qualification. She moved to Whitehorse for a 6-month contract in 2018, fell in love with the town and the northern lifestyle, and has lived there for 2 years. She currently provides dietitian services for Yukon Continuing Care while also running her own private practice.

Joline takes a non-diet, weight-neutral approach to nutrition with a focus on mindful and intuitive eating. This philosophy doesn’t impose rules about portion sizes, types of food to avoid, or when to eat; instead it relies on understanding your own body’s hunger cues and developing a healthy relationship with food.

"I don’t focus on weight loss as an outcome," Joline says. "Weight loss might be a result of making changes, but I never focus on that as a goal. Instead, I focus on changing habits."

Education is a big part of what Joline does during her nutrition counseling sessions. Many people know what they should be doing to improve their nutritional health but need help applying those things to their daily lives. "I don’t do meal plans, and that is something that people are sometimes surprised by. Prescriptive meal plans can contribute to restrictive eating, which is not the point. Instead I do a lot of education on how to plan and prep meals, giving people the skills to do it themselves."

Her holistic approach to health and wellness means that her clients can expect to be asked not only about their food intake, but what their grocery store habits look like, who they live with, and what their work and life routine looks like. Once she gets to know where they're starting from, she works with them to create a "nutrition tool box" that they can apply in their day-to-day lives.

Although everyone can benefit from the services of a Registered Dietitian, it can be especially beneficial for people who are dealing with chronic conditions, disease, digestive issues, allergies and intolerances, recovery from surgery or an injury, weight management issues, low energy or nutrient deficiencies. Joline says that her ideal clients are those who are looking for food freedom; they may have tried diets in the past, are tired of them not working, and are looking for a different approach.

Clinic owner Leslie Tempest is excited to be able to offer Therapeutic Nutrition to current and new clients. "Food, eating and nutrition are central to all of our lives and are directly connected to how we live, feel and heal. Adding Therapeutic Nutrition to the complement of services at ProActive Rehab allows us to more readily help our clients use these things to their advantage in their overall healing and recovery processes."

Joline was interested in joining the ProActive Rehab team because of what she sees as an alignment in values. "Leslie has created a culture at ProActive of giving people their lives back through their health," she says. "Good nutrition really complements that. It also improves outcomes of physiotherapy related to injury and healing, so I think it’s a natural fit."

Joline meets with clients virtually through ProActive’s secure online appointment platform. Appointments are available every Friday from 11 am to 6 pm. To book an appointment, call us at 705-788-1480, or fill out the Request an Appointment form.
