The secret to our success at ProActive Rehab is our incredible staff, made up of physiotherapists, exercise therapists, RMTs, assistants and administrators. Our team members work closely together to provide our clients with comprehensive and personalized treatment options.
Physiotherapy is ProActive’s core service; it’s the one we started with 20 years ago and what we are most known for. ProActive’s physio team includes two registered physiotherapists, an exercise therapist, and three physiotherapist assistants (PTAs), who work together to provide instruction, supervision, education, support and encouragement.
“We are a highly experienced group of physios, assistants and rehab professionals who are passionate about helping you help yourself. We take an active approach, using exercise as medicine, and pride ourselves in being on the leading edge of evidence-based care,” says Leslie Tempest, clinic owner and physiotherapist.
Leslie Tempest is our lead physiotherapist and has been the owner of ProActive Rehab since 1999. She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and has completed many post-graduate training courses including courses in biomechanics, manual therapy, McKenzie A-D, therapeutic exercise, concussion care, and the neuroscience approach to pain management, among others.
Leslie’s goal as a physiotherapist is to empower her clients with evidenced-based tools and knowledge to help themselves overcome obstacles to recovery, reach their goals and live healthy, active lives. Her clients appreciate her knowledge and technical expertise, as well as her caring and supportive nature. Her goal as clinic owner is to provide a team, a space and an environment where each client receives individualized care and a comprehensive treatment plan focused on their goals.
Stacey Van Schyndel has been a physiotherapist at ProActive since 2011. She has a Master’s in Physiotherapy from Queen's University, a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology from Brock University, and has completed additional courses in concussion therapy, vestibular rehab, McKenzie A-D, minimalist running, non-internal management of pelvic floor pain, and pain neuroscience education to treat chronic pain, among others.
Stacey works with each of her clients to develop a comprehensive plan to address their injury or concern that fits with their goals and lifestyle. She is compassionate and eager to help, and is dedicated to delivering quality care. “Whether you are struggling with an injury or simply looking for exercises to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, we are here to help,” she says. “The vast experience of all of our team members will help you get on the right path to recovery.”
Currently on maternity leave, Marlee Moore is ProActive’s Aquatic and Exercise Therapist, working with our physiotherapists to develop customized exercise programming and leading our Aquatic Therapy program. She graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2014 with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation and minor in Gerontology. She also completed a Diploma in Fitness and Health promotion from Conestoga College in 2010. Marlee is a Can-Fit-Pro Certified Personal Trainer, an Aquatic Rehabilitation Instructor with WaterART Fitness International, certified with the Canadian Aquatic Rehab Institute, a member of the Canadian AquaFitness Leaders Alliance and a certified Lifeguard with the National Lifeguard Society.
Samantha Thompson joined the ProActive Team as a PTA in 2019. She graduated from the Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physiotherapy Assistant program at Durham College, and has since completed additional courses in concussion therapy, aquatic therapy and taping.
Samantha works hard to make sure her clients know that she is as passionate about their recovery as they are. She is highly engaged in her clients’ progress, offering encouragement and celebrating their achievements. “Physiotherapy works best if you are motivated to get better. It takes hard work and dedication,” she says.
Nelly Twiss became a PTA at ProActive in 2021. She has a degree in Kinesiology and diploma in Health & Fitness Promotion from Guelph-Humber University, and has recently completed the Registered Massage Therapy course at Langara College. She is currently working towards her RMT certification.
Nelly takes a keen interest in her clients’ interests, hobbies and activities, and uses that knowledge to support them in their recovery. She is a good listener and makes sure that every client feels heard, understood and supported. “We are an energetic team with a passion for helping people get back to their favourite activities. We love to be a part of their recovery process,” she says.
Shelby Speicher is currently on maternity leave, but joined the ProActive team as a PTA in 2019. She is a graduate of the Physiotherapy Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Georgian College, and has experience with low back pain management and concussion care.
The depth and breadth of experience on our physio team ensures that our clients get the best possible care on their recovery journey. “We work as a team, with you, the client, at the center, supporting and encouraging you every step of the way,” says Leslie Tempest.
