Physiotherapists have advanced knowledge of how the body moves, what keeps it from moving well and how to restore mobility” CPA

Physiotherapy is a drug free health care practice” OPA

Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of various types of injuries and physical dysfunctions that prevent you from living to your fullest.  At ProActive Rehab & Sport Injury Centre you will receive a one on one, individualized assessment to determine the source or cause of your issues and develop an appropriate treatment plan.  Your treatment will also be individualized and may consist of healing modalities (like laser or ultrasound), manual therapy techniques, education and exercise instruction, independent exercise and/or aquatherapy and pain management as required.  As you are a partner in your recovery, you will be expected to maintain a home program.  The effectiveness and progress of your in-clinic treatment is directly related to your own commitment to following through at home and making positive changes in current habits.

In addition to traditional out-patient assessment and treatment, at ProActive Rehab we also offer individualized Work Hardening Programs, direction and management for children with neurological deficits (i.e. Cerebral Palsy), long term monitoring and direction for adults with neurological impairments (i.e. stroke, M.S. Parkinson’s Disease),  postural assessments, direction and guidance on prevention of injury as well as advice on developing preventative training programs for athletes.

As physiotherapists it is our goal to assist you in taking back control; to maximize your function and to help you get back to living – ProActively!

Acupuncture

ACUPUNCTURE

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment modality that can be used to reduce pain, promote healing, and improve function.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into the body at specific 'acupuncture points".

Anatomical Acupuncture is the technique practiced by most western medical practitioners, including physiotherapists.  This method combines the traditional knowledge of acupuncture points along with modern knowledge of the anatomy of the body and how this relates to injury.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture stimulates the body to release natural painkilling hormones, called endorphins.  The subsequent reduction in pain allows tense muscles to relax, increases circulation to the area, reduces inflammation, and promotes healing.

What Conditions can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture can be used to treat acute and chronic conditions, including:

  • Headaches
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Referred pain such as sciatica
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Tendonitis and other overuse injuries
  • Arthritis

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Generally, acupuncture does not hurt.  You may feel the needle pass through the skin, and sometimes what is usually described as a 'zinging' sensation.  Once the needles are in place, it is rare to feel anything.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't have Acupuncture?

Anatomical acupuncturists usually choose not to perform acupuncture on someone who is pregnant or who suffers from seizures.  Extra care needs to be taken with haemophiliacs, as well as clients taking blood thinners, who have osteoporosis, who are diabetic or who have received treatment for cancer.

What are the Risks of Acupuncture Treatment?

There are very few risks involved with acupuncture treatment.  Acupuncture can lower blood sugar, so it is wise to have had a light meal prior to treatment.  You may get a small bruise where the needle was located.  Some people feel fatiqued following treatment, while others feel refreshed and full of energy.  Everyone reacts in a slightly different way to treatment.

How Many Treatments will be Required?

The number of treatments will vary from person to person.  It is affected by the individual and the chronicity of the injury.  It is expected that improvements will be noted within six treatments, and treatment can continue for as long as it is effective.  When improvements are maintained, treatment frequency can be reduced.

What else will my physiotherapist do for me?

Along with acupuncture treatment, your physiotherapist will often teach you a program of exercises and stretches to carry out at home.  Your physiotherapist may also use other manual therapy techniques, use heat or ice, or recommend you also see a Registered Massage Therapist.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is used to treat and prevent physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints of the body. Massage therapy is effective for various sports, workplace and motor vehicle accident injuries.  Musculoskeletal conditions such as; arthritis, tendonitis, muscular strain, tension headache and whiplash are commonly treated with massage therapy.

Your first appointment will include a health history and consent form and a one on one assessment with your massage therapist to establish a treatment plan that is safe and effective for you.  During your massage your body will be fully covered with sheets and only the area(s) being treated will be uncovered. A variety of techniques and varying levels of pressure may be used for your massage depending on your needs and condition. Your therapist will always work within your pressure tolerance.  Your massage may include a combination of techniques such as the ones listed below.

Swedish:  effleurage, petrissage, tractioning, recoil, myofascial trigger point, and cross fibre frictioning

Non-Swedish:  myofascial release, rhythmic mobilization, joint play   Other Modalities:  passive stretching, hydrotherapy, range of motion exercises, post isometric relaxation.     Insurance receipts are provided to you if you are claiming massage therapy through your private extended health benefits plan.  Your insurance company may require a doctor’s referral before they will cover your claim.  Approval from your auto insurance or WSIB is necessary if you have a motor vehicle accident claim or work place injury.

Orthotics and Rehab products

 Custom Foot Orthotics

Custom foot orthotics are a custom made insole that inserts directly into your shoe.  They provide arch support and foot control to help alleviate the source of many causes of pain.  Our feet are at the bottom of our lower extremity kinetic chain and as such play a great role in the biomechanics of function.  If they go wrong, they can negatiely influence the function of the entire lower extremity up to and including the lower back.  Custom Foot Orthotics are designed just for you, enabling your feet to be correctly positioned and supported and therefore correcting these biomechanical faults.

Cranial Sacral Therapy

Cranial Sacral Therapy

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) was developed by an American Osteopath, John E. Upledger.  It works mainly with the membranes and cerebral spinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and the spinal cord.  The Cranial Sacral System can be identified through its inherent rhythmic motion anywhere on the body.  On the surface it feels like a very subtle rolling in and rolling out of the tissue.  In a healthy body this rhythm is fluent and symmetrical.  Disturbances to health and wellbeing, on either a physical or emotional level, weill be reflected as disturbrances to the balanced flow of this rhythmic motion.

 A Healthy System

Restricted mobility of the tissue anywhere on the body is an indication of reduced health and vitality in that region leading to, or caused by, disease and dysfunction.  The therapist's role is to identify areas of restricted mobility and to enable the body to dissolve any such restrictions in order to encourage free and fluid cranial sacral motion which is the basis of a healthy system.

 Treatment

Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams, or the weight of a nickel.  The Cranial Sacral Process works simultaneously on both the physical and emotional levels, providing a means of access to the emotions through the physical body and a means of releasing long established, deeply embedded psycho-emotional traumas, patterns and conditionings along with their physical counterparts.

Who Can Benefit

The deep relaxation effect of Cranial Sacral Therapy will be of benefit to anyone and can be helpful in maintaining a healthy body.  Any orthopedic problems with emphasis on axial issues such a head, neck and low back will be helped by Cranial Sacral Therapy.  Other conditions that may be helped include generalized dysfunctions of the orthopedic and nervous systems including connective tissue disorders, headaches and temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) issues.  Cranial Sacral Therapy and the more emotionally focused advanced work called Somatoemotional Release (SER) are effective in helping to process emotional difficulties, stress and tension-related problems.
